Kobellite from Vena, Sweden – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This historic Kobellite specimen from Vena, Sweden, displays the rare lead-bismuth-antimony sulfosalt in compact form on a massive ore matrix. The silver-grey to steel-grey metallic areas contrast attractively with the brown weathered zones, giving the specimen the typical appearance of a sulfosalt-rich ore assemblage. Individual crystals are not recognizable with the naked eye, and the mineral occurs predominantly in dense massive form. The contrasting structure and provenance from a classic Scandinavian locality make this an interesting collector's specimen.

Geology & Origin

Kobellite is a rare sulfosalt mineral containing lead, bismuth, antimony, and sulfur. It forms mainly in hydrothermal ore deposits and commonly occurs together with other lead and bismuth minerals. The Swedish locality of Vena belongs to the classic Scandinavian ore districts from which numerous rare sulfides and sulfosalts have been described. Due to its complex chemical composition and relative rarity, Kobellite is considered a desirable specialty among mineral collectors.
