Jasper with Quartz Veins, red; South Africa – 100 g

This 100 g lot features vivid red jasper intersected by striking white quartz veins, creating natural patterns and visual contrast. The combination of opaque red jasper and partially translucent quartz inclusions gives the pieces a unique and attractive appearance. Due to its hardness and structure, this material is ideal for lapidary work such as cutting, tumbling, or polishing, and is also well suited for decorative use or collecting.

Geology & Origin
Jasper is a fine-grained to microcrystalline variety of quartz (SiO₂), formed through sedimentary or volcanic-hydrothermal processes. Its red coloration is caused by iron oxide inclusions (typically hematite), while the bright white veins are composed of pure quartz. In South Africa, jasper commonly occurs alongside quartz veins and banded formations, especially in regions like the Knersvlakte and the Witwatersrand, where white quartz pebbles and layered structures are present.

With a Mohs hardness of around 6.5 to 7, jasper is highly durable and well suited for cutting and polishing. The contrasting quartz veins enhance both stability and visual appeal, especially when polished or used as tumbled stone.
