Iodargyrite crystals from the Schöne Aussicht Mine, Dernbach, Westerwald, Germany – Scab as unique piece
This interesting small cabinet specimen from the Westerwald region displays Iodyrite within dark oxidized matrix together with quartz rich sections. The rare silver halide occurs as irregular to massive aggregates with resinous to greasy luster and brownish to yellowish coloration. The specimen shows the characteristic appearance of typical secondary silver minerals from the oxidized zones of hydrothermal ore veins. The contrasting combination of light gangue matrix and dark ore rich areas gives the piece an authentic and mineralogically appealing appearance.
Geology & Origin
The Schöne Aussicht Mine near Dernbach in the Westerwald region is one of the classic historic ore localities of Germany. The deposit belongs to hydrothermal vein systems carrying various silver, lead and copper minerals. Iodyrite forms secondarily in oxidized zones of silver rich deposits through reactions between silver bearing solutions and iodine containing components. Due to its rarity, the mineral is considered a highly desirable collector mineral from historic silver deposits.
