Idrialite, Cinnabar and Pecoraite with accessory minerals from the Culver Baer Mine, California – 1 unique flat

This remarkable selection from the Culver Baer Mine in Sonoma County, California, features a striking combination of rare and unusual minerals. The pieces show vivid red patches of Cinnabar, yellow-green areas of Pecoraite, and dark blackish-brown zones of organic Idrialite. Under UV light, the Idrialite exhibits a bright yellow fluorescence, making this flat highly attractive for fluorescence collectors as well. The specimens are mostly compact, with massive character; some show layered structures or shiny zones, indicating finely distributed crystalline components.

Geology & origin

The Culver Baer Mine is a well-known source of mercury-related secondary minerals in California. Idrialite – a rare hydrocarbon mineral – typically forms in such geologically active mercury deposits, where hydrothermal activity mobilizes and deposits organic compounds. Cinnabar is the main mercury-bearing mineral, while Pecoraite appears as a nickel-bearing secondary phase. This rare mineral combination from a single locality is only documented at a few places worldwide. The flat shown is exactly the one offered.

The flat shown in the pictures will be shipped with the corresponding box and, if applicable, folding boxes. These may be partially used, show signs of wear, and have multiple labels or markings.
