Holdenite and Kraisslite from Sterling Hill, NJ, USA– cabinet specimen as unique piece

This exceptional cabinet specimen originates from the famous Sterling Hill deposit in New Jersey and features the rare minerals Holdenite and Kraisslite within a contrasting matrix. The specimen displays predominantly reddish brown to reddish purple mineralization with lighter areas and dark associated minerals. Individual crystals are not clearly developed or recognizable on this specimen; the minerals occur mainly as massive to fine-grained aggregates. The attractive coloration and the combination of two rare mineral species from a classic locality give this specimen a distinctive appeal for collectors.

Geology & Origin

Together with Franklin, Sterling Hill is one of the world's most important zinc deposits and is renowned for its remarkable diversity of rare manganese, zinc, and arsenic minerals. Holdenite is a rare zinc manganese arsenate, while Kraisslite is another uncommon manganese zinc silicate characteristic of this unique deposit. Complex metamorphic processes within the ore bodies produced numerous unusual mineral species, many of which occur at only a few localities worldwide. As a result, Sterling Hill remains one of the most significant classic mineral localities for specialized collectors.
