Herderite crystals from Viitaniemi, Finland – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This interesting small cabinet specimen displays Herderite on light colored pegmatite matrix from the classic Finnish locality of Viitaniemi. Crystals are recognizable and occur as pale green to colorless areas within the matrix. The specimen shows the typical appearance of Herderite with massive to crystalline sections and natural intergrowths. The contrast between the light crystal-bearing areas and the rusty weathering traces gives the piece an attractive and authentic collector character.

Geology & Origin

Herderite is a rare calcium beryllium phosphate containing fluorine or hydroxyl and is typically found in granitic pegmatites. The Viitaniemi locality in Finland is one of the most important European occurrences for rare phosphate and beryllium minerals. The Herderite crystals formed during the late stages of pegmatite crystallization when phosphate-rich fluids precipitated minerals in fractures and cavities. Specimens from Viitaniemi are highly appreciated by collectors because of the remarkable mineral diversity of this historic locality.
