Heliotrope; Sukabumi, Java, Indonesia – 100 g
This 100 g lot contains deep green heliotrope (also known as bloodstone) with distinctive red and yellow speckles, giving the material its vivid and contrasting appearance. The natural patterns and solid composition make it ideal for tumbling, cutting, polishing, or crafting custom jewelry and decorative pieces.
Geology & Origin
Heliotrope is a microcrystalline variety of chalcedony (SiO₂), characterized by its green base color caused by inclusions of chlorite or amphibole. The red and yellow spots result from finely distributed hematite or iron oxide. This material typically forms in hydrothermal environments, often associated with volcanic or metamorphic rocks.
The Sukabumi region on the island of Java in Indonesia is known for its rich quartz and chalcedony deposits. Heliotrope from this area forms in silica-rich veins and cavities, where mineralizing fluids create colorful inclusions in fine-grained quartz. Specimens from Sukabumi are especially valued for their strong coloration and suitability for lapidary work.
