Hausmannite xls; Ilfeld, Harz, Germany; large Cab; unique piece
Hausmannite crystals from Ilfeld, Harz, Germany – large cabinet specimen as unique piece
This exceptional large cabinet specimen features Hausmannite from Ilfeld in the Harz Mountains, one of the classic German localities for manganese minerals. The elongated and striking matrix is dominated by dark gray to black metallic Hausmannite areas extending across nearly the entire specimen. Particularly impressive are the numerous crystalline sections with strong metallic luster and the typical black coloration of the mineral. The crystals are clearly visible and give the specimen a very attractive structure despite its massive appearance. The unusual elongated shape makes this large cabinet specimen especially decorative and highly collectible.
Geology & origin
The Harz Mountains belong to the most important historic ore districts in Europe. The deposits near Ilfeld are especially well known for manganese rich mineralization that produced rare and classic manganese minerals such as Hausmannite. Hausmannite is a manganese oxide mineral with a characteristic dark metallic appearance and usually forms in hydrothermal ore deposits or metamorphically altered manganese rich environments. Specimens from Ilfeld are highly valued among collectors and belong to the classic German mineral localities.
