Grape Agate (massive); Java, Indonesia – 100 g
This 100 g selection consists of massive rough material of so-called “grape agate” from Java, Indonesia. Unlike the more well-known botryoidal (grape-like) formations, this variety displays no spherical surface texture, but instead compact, banded aggregates in shades of violet to grey. Some pieces show subtle iridescent sheens or areas with greenish to golden shimmer.
Well-suited for lapidary work such as cutting, tumbling, or polishing – and also an attractive raw material for collectors of unusual chalcedony varieties.
Geology & Origin
So-called grape agate from Java is a microcrystalline variety of chalcedony, typically forming in cavities within ancient volcanic rocks. While botryoidal shapes develop in small open vugs, the massive material forms in dense veins or cavity-filling masses without surface nodules. Its characteristic colors – ranging from violet and grey to yellow-green – result from trace inclusions of iron, manganese, or nickel.
This material has gained international popularity in recent years due to its stability and vibrant color spectrum. The massive form, in particular, offers a versatile and durable base for creative lapidary or collection use.
