Goethite Iron Cap from Limestone Quarry, Hermannstein, Lahn Dill Area, Germany – miniature specimen as unique piece

This attractive specimen displays Goethite in the classic kidney ore habit. The surface consists of densely intergrown botryoidal structures with a silky to dull metallic luster. Its deep dark grey to black color and uniform botryoidal growth give the specimen a particularly decorative appearance. No crystals are developed; instead, the Goethite forms the characteristic rounded and concentrically layered surface typical of kidney ore specimens.

Geology & Origin

Goethite (FeO(OH)) is one of the most important iron hydroxide minerals and commonly forms as a weathering or oxidation product of iron-rich deposits. The Hermannstein locality in the Lahn-Dill district is part of one of Germany’s classic iron ore regions and is well known for high quality Goethite and Hematite occurrences. Kidney ore forms through the layered growth of countless fine concentric shells and is among the most sought-after habits of the mineral. This specimen is an excellent representative of this characteristic formation.
