Gersdorffite crystals from Heimberg, Harz, Germany – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This attractive cabinet specimen from the Harz Mountains displays numerous dark grey to steel grey Gersdorffite crystals on a richly crystallized matrix. The surface is densely covered with small but clearly developed crystals that give the specimen an appealing metallic luster. Particularly attractive are the contrasting light colored associated minerals, which highlight the darker crystal aggregates. Crystals are visible across much of the display surface and provide the specimen with strong collector appeal.

Geology & Origin

Gersdorffite is a nickel arsenic sulfide with the chemical formula NiAsS and is one of the classic ore minerals of hydrothermal deposits. The Heimberg locality in the Harz Mountains belongs to Germany's historic mining districts and is known for a variety of arsenide, sulfide and ore minerals. Gersdorffite typically forms in hydrothermal veins, often associated with nickel ores, cobalt minerals and other sulfides. Well crystallized specimens from German localities are comparatively uncommon and make an interesting addition to systematic mineral collections.
