This micromount displays distinctly embedded Franklinite crystals with a black to steel-grey colour and strong metallic to submetallic lustre. The dark crystals contrast clearly with the light, whitish to slightly pinkish matrix and form several well-defined angular crystal sections. This unique specimen originates from Franklin, New Jersey, USA.

Geology & Origin

Franklinite is a zinc- and manganese-bearing iron oxide of the spinel group and a characteristic ore mineral of the Franklin deposit. Franklin is part of the famous Franklin-Sterling Hill mining district in New Jersey, known for its metamorphosed zinc-manganese ore bodies and exceptional mineral diversity. Franklinite was named after the Franklin locality and commonly occurs there in association with other characteristic zinc and manganese minerals.
