Franklinfurnaceite from Franklin, NJ, USA– small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This interesting small cabinet specimen displays Franklinfurnaceite on a dark, finely textured matrix from the world-famous Franklin mining district in New Jersey. The rare mineral occurs here in compact form and gives the specimen a characteristic appearance with its metallic to silky luster. Individual crystals are not clearly recognizable on this specimen; the mineral occurs mainly as dense fine-grained to scaly aggregates within the matrix. The historic significance of the locality together with the rarity of the mineral makes this specimen an attractive addition to specialized mineral collections.

Geology & Origin

Franklinfurnaceite is a very rare zinc manganese silicate from the unique mineral assemblage of the Franklin deposit in New Jersey. The Franklin and Sterling Hill deposits are among the most important mineral localities in the world and have produced numerous rare minerals, including species found almost exclusively at these localities. The complex metamorphism of manganese and zinc rich ores resulted in an extraordinary mineral diversity, making Franklin one of the most famous classic mineral localities for collectors to this day.
