Fossilized (petrified) wood with Chalcedony; green; Indonesia; unique piece
Fossilized (petrified) wood with Chalcedony, green, from Indonesia. 840 g as unique piece.
This 840 g piece of fossilized wood from Indonesia displays striking green chalcedony replacement and preservation, giving the specimen its intense and vivid coloration. The surface features a mix of green, yellow and brown tones arranged in irregular bands, veins and natural cavities. Particularly eye-catching are the glossy chalcedony-rich areas, which show a slightly waxy sheen and highlight the transition between original wood structure and siliceous mineralisation.
Inside the specimen, silicate-rich fluids permeated and preserved the organic material, leaving the wood structure fossilized and simultaneously embedded and preserved through chalcedony. The natural shape exhibits both massive sections and fine textures, making this piece interesting both mineralogically and decoratively.
Geology & Origin
Fossil wood from Indonesia forms within volcanically influenced sedimentary environments where organic material is mineralized by silica-rich fluids. Under long-term pressure and temperature conditions, the wood is transformed into chalcedony and other cryptocrystalline quartz forms. The green coloration commonly results from traces of nickel or iron compounds incorporated during mineralisation. This specimen represents a particularly vivid and well-preserved example of this geologically fascinating process.
