UV-Minerals; Franklin Furnace, Sussex Co., NJ, USA; 100 g
Willemite with fluorescence under UV light from Franklin Furnace, New Jersey, USA – 100 g
This lot consists of 100 g of Willemite from the world-famous deposits of Franklin Furnace in New Jersey, USA. In daylight, the pieces usually display rather inconspicuous colors, but under ultraviolet light they reveal the intense fluorescence that makes Franklin minerals so distinctive. The fluorescence is especially pronounced under shortwave UV light (SWUV). The material contains massive inclusions within a rich paragenesis typical of Franklin, including zincite and franklinite. Such lots are ideal for experimenting with UV lamps, for educational purposes, and as an addition to fluorescence collections.
Geology & origin
Franklin Furnace is one of the most significant localities for fluorescent minerals in the world. Its remarkable mineral diversity formed through complex geological processes, during which zinc-rich deposits were transformed by metamorphism and later geologic events into one of the most mineralogically varied regions known. The characteristic fluorescence of many Franklin minerals gives this material both scientific and collector value.
