Ferrihydrite and Langite crystals from Lautenthal, Harz, Germany – miniature specimen as unique piece

The small cabinet specimen shows Ferrihydrite and Langite in a contrasting mineralization on a dark matrix. Particularly noticeable are the turquoise to blue-green areas of Langite, which stand out clearly against the yellowish-brown to vivid orange-brown Ferrihydrite and the dark-gray matrix. The irregularly textured surface with small cavities and differently distributed mineral coatings gives this unique specimen a varied appearance.

Geology & Origin

Lautenthal in the Harz Mountains belongs to a historic mining district characterized by hydrothermal lead-zinc veins. Ferrihydrite typically forms as a secondary iron mineral through weathering and oxidation of iron-bearing primary minerals. Langite is a hydrous copper sulfate that likewise forms secondarily in the oxidation zones of copper-bearing deposits. The association of both minerals records secondary alteration processes within the ore mineralization of Lautenthal.
