Eudidymite, Aegirine xls; Mt. Malosa, Zomba, Malawi; TN; unique piece
Eudidymite and Aegirine crystals from Mount Malosa, Zomba, Malawi – micromount as unique piece
This micromount specimen displays a pale wedge shaped Eudidymite with silky to vitreous luster and embedded dark green to black lustrous Aegirine. The strong contrast between the light main mineral and the dark associated mineral gives the specimen a particularly aesthetic appearance. Its distinctive form together with the harmonious mineral association makes this piece an attractive collector specimen from the well known Mount Malosa locality.
Geology & Origin
Mount Malosa in the Zomba region of Malawi is one of the world’s best known alkaline intrusive complexes with exceptional mineral diversity. Numerous rare sodium, zirconium, niobium and rare earth minerals occur within its pegmatitic zones. Eudidymite is a rare sodium beryllium silicate typically formed in nepheline syenitic pegmatites. Aegirine develops under alkaline conditions and is one of the characteristic associated minerals of this locality. Specimens from Mount Malosa are especially valued for their unusual mineral associations and aesthetic development.
