This small cabinet specimen features Erdite in a dark gray to nearly black matrix with a fine-grained, locally slightly greenish-gray surface. The compact specimen displays varying mineral textures and occasional brownish areas. This unique specimen originates from Coyote Peak, California, USA.
Geology & Origin
Erdite is a rare sodium-iron sulfide known particularly from alkaline geological environments. Coyote Peak in California is a mineralogically interesting alkaline intrusion and the type locality for Erdite. The unusual composition of the rocks at this locality resulted in the formation of various rare mineral species.
