This small cabinet specimen displays numerous Embolite crystals densely distributed across the matrix, forming a distinctly crystal-rich surface. The crystals are predominantly beige to honey-brown, partly translucent, and occur in varying sizes with well-developed crystal faces. This unique specimen comes from the Central Mine at Broken Hill, Australia.

Geology & Origin

Embolite is a rare silver halide containing chlorine and bromine that forms primarily in the oxidation zones of silver-rich ore deposits. Broken Hill in New South Wales is one of the world's classic mineral localities and is particularly known for its exceptionally diverse lead-zinc-silver mineralization. In the near-surface oxidized zones, secondary silver minerals such as Embolite formed under suitable geochemical conditions.
