Top Elyite crystals from Lautenthal, Harz, Germany – small cabinet size as unique piece
This rare Scab specimen from the Harz Mountains displays violet to purple Elyite crystals on an iron-rich weathered matrix. The crystals are clearly visible and form colorful coatings and aggregates that stand out distinctly against the brown and yellow associated minerals. The vivid coloration gives the specimen strong visual appeal and makes it a noteworthy addition to any collection of rare lead-copper sulfosalts. The Elyite on this specimen is particularly well visible for the species.
Geology & Origin
Elyite is an extremely rare lead-copper sulfosalt that was first described as a distinct mineral species in 1984. It forms in the oxidation zones of sulfide ore deposits and is commonly associated with other secondary lead and copper minerals. The mines around Lautenthal in the Upper Harz region belong to Germany's classic ore districts and produced silver, lead and copper ores for centuries. Complex weathering processes within these deposits created numerous rare secondary minerals, including Elyite. Specimens from Lautenthal represent one of the well-known German occurrences of this rare mineral and are highly appreciated by specialized collectors.
