Eglestonite crystals from the Mariposa Mine, Terlingua, TX, USA –  micromount as unique piece

This micromount specimen with Eglestonite crystals from the Mariposa Mine, Terlingua, Texas, USA, represents a rare and highly collectible occurrence of this mercury mineral. The Eglestonite crystals are small but clearly visible and appear as dark to metallic lustrous areas within the reddish matrix.

The crystals are not free standing but embedded, appearing as compact, granular to slightly lustrous inclusions. They contrast well with the oxidized red brown matrix, which is typical for the Terlingua deposits. Despite their small size, the crystalline nature is recognizable and gives the specimen clear mineralogical significance.

Geology & Origin

The Terlingua region in Texas is a world famous locality for mercury minerals, especially from the oxidized zones of cinnabar deposits. Eglestonite is a rare secondary mercury mineral formed under specific geochemical conditions. The Mariposa Mine is considered a classic locality for this mineral group and is highly regarded among collectors.
