Dresserite crystals from Francon Quarry, Montreal, Canada – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This cabinet specimen shows Dresserite crystals from the Francon Quarry, Montreal, Canada. The piece comes from one of the world’s most famous localities for rare carbonate minerals and displays a typical and aesthetically appealing habit of this species.

The Dresserite crystals are clearly visible and form spherical to radiating aggregates in light cream colored tones. These are set on a fine crystalline drusy matrix, creating a strong visual contrast. The combination of the sparkling matrix crystals and the more prominent Dresserite aggregates gives the specimen a particularly attractive and dynamic appearance.

Geology & Origin

Dresserite is a rare barium carbonate hydroxide belonging to the group of secondary carbonate minerals. It forms in alkaline carbonate rich rocks, especially in cavities and fractures of carbonatitic or limestone related formations.

The Francon Quarry in Montreal is one of the most important localities for rare mineral species worldwide. The complex geology of this deposit has produced an exceptional variety of rare minerals, including well developed Dresserite crystals.
