Domeykite from the Mohawk Mine, Calumet, MI, USA – miniature specimen as unique piece

This miniature specimen shows Domeykite from the Mohawk Mine, Calumet, Michigan, USA. The piece presents a striking contrast between the light quartz rich matrix and embedded metallic ore areas with reddish to copper colored tones.

The Domeykite occurs in a massive to irregular embedded form, showing typical metallic areas with a slight luster. The variation in color and structure creates a vivid and diverse surface. The copper colored zones stand out clearly against the lighter background, giving the specimen an attractive overall appearance.

Geology & Origin

Domeykite is a copper arsenide and a typical mineral of hydrothermal copper deposits. It forms under reducing conditions and often occurs together with other copper minerals.

The Mohawk Mine in the famous Keweenaw Peninsula region of Michigan is part of one of the most important native copper districts in the world. These deposits are well known for their diversity of copper minerals and their mineralogical significance.
