This micromount specimen features a Diamond crystal from the famous Premier Mine (now Cullinan Mine), Transvaal, South Africa. It is a very small but clearly recognizable octahedron, the classic and typical crystal form of Diamond.
The Diamond crystal appears colorless to slightly milky and shows the characteristic octahedral habit with well defined faces. Despite its small size, the geometric structure is clearly visible, making this specimen especially interesting for systematic collections and for illustrating crystal morphology. The crystal has a natural matte to slightly lustrous surface and displays the typical Diamond habit in pure form.
Geology & Origin
Diamond is the cubic form of carbon and forms under extremely high pressure and temperature in the Earth’s mantle. It is transported to the surface by volcanic processes within kimberlite pipes.
The Premier Mine in South Africa is one of the world’s most important diamond deposits and is especially known for producing large and high quality crystals, including the famous Cullinan Diamond.
