Derbylite from Bucca Della Vena, Italy – miniature specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features Derbylite from Bucca Della Vena, Italy. The specimen displays a contrasting coloration of gray to dark gray areas combined with a striking orange coating that spreads irregularly across the surface. The matrix appears compact and finely structured, creating an interesting interplay of different mineral zones.

Well developed crystals are not present on this specimen. Instead, the surface shows a fine grained to massive structure in which the Derbylite occurs embedded. However, the mineral can still be clearly recognized by its typical appearance and characteristic color distribution.

Geology & Origin

Derbylite is a rare titanium iron antimony oxide that forms in metamorphic environments. It develops under specific conditions, often in contact zones or strongly altered deposits.

The Bucca Della Vena locality in Tuscany is a classic site for rare minerals and is particularly known for its variety of unusual oxide and sulfide minerals. The complex geological history of this region results in a wide range of mineralogically interesting parageneses.
