Cryptomelane from Ottre, Ardennes, Belgium – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen shows Cryptomelane from Ottre, Ardennes, Belgium. The piece displays a strong contrast between a light quartz rich matrix and dark gray to black mineralized areas that run irregularly through the rock.

The Cryptomelane crystals are mostly finely developed and occur as dense crusty to microcrystalline aggregates. Distinct individual crystals are not clearly visible, but the surface shows a typical subtle luster reflecting the crystalline nature of the mineral.

Geology & Origin

Cryptomelane belongs to the group of manganese oxides and typically forms in the oxidation zone of manganese rich deposits. It develops through weathering and alteration processes and commonly occurs in fine grained to massive aggregates.

The Ardennes region in Belgium is a classic locality for such secondary mineral formations and is well known for its diverse occurrences of manganese minerals.
