This small cabinet specimen shows Cryolithionite from Ivigtut, Greenland, Denmark. The piece displays a strong contrast between a light massive matrix and dark brown to blackish embedded crystal areas forming a striking mosaic like texture.
The Cryolithionite crystals are clearly visible and exhibit compact partly blocky to granular structures with a subtle luster. They are tightly intergrown and fully embedded in the host rock, resulting in a dense and distinctly crystalline appearance.
Geology & Origin
Cryolithionite is a rare lithium bearing fluoride closely related to Cryolite. It forms under specific conditions in granitic pegmatites and fluoride rich systems.
The Ivigtut deposit is one of the most important localities worldwide for fluoride minerals and is especially known for its exceptional diversity of rare mineral species.
