Cryolite from Ivigtut, Greenland, Denmark – miniature specimen as unique piece

This miniature specimen shows Cryolite from Ivigtut, Greenland, Denmark. The piece consists of a massive light colored to slightly translucent matrix with several brown to honey colored crystals embedded in strong contrast.

The Cryolite is clearly visible and display compact partly blocky forms with a subtle luster. They are embedded in the host rock but remain well distinguishable, giving the specimen an appealing structure and a clear crystalline character.

Geology & Origin

Cryolite is a rare sodium aluminum fluoride that occurs at only a few localities worldwide. The Ivigtut deposit is the most important and historically significant occurrence and was once the only economically relevant source of this mineral.

It formed in granitic pegmatites under specific geochemical conditions. Cryolite played a key role in aluminum production before synthetic substitutes were developed.
