Embedded Crossite crystals from Glasbachgraben, Burgenland, Austria – miniature specimen as unique piece

This miniature specimen shows embedded Crossite crystals from Glasbachgraben, Burgenland, Austria. The piece appears dark blue to black and has a compact, massive structure with a fine grained to slightly lustrous surface.

The Crossite crystals are embedded in the host rock and do not form free standing, well defined individual crystals. Nevertheless, the crystalline nature is clearly visible through subtle reflections and the characteristic internal structure of the matrix.

Geology & Origin

Crossite is a sodium rich amphibole belonging to the glaucophane group and forms under high pressure conditions in metamorphic rocks, especially in so called blueschists. These rocks are typical for subduction zones and provide important insights into plate tectonic processes.

The Glasbachgraben locality in Burgenland is known for such metamorphic formations and offers valuable insights into the geological evolution of the region.
