Coulsonite from Dublabera, India – micromount as unique piece

This micromount specimen features Coulsonite from Dublabera, India. The rare vanadium iron oxide forms dark metallic crystal aggregates on a reddish brown matrix. The small crystals display a strong blackish gray to steel colored luster and stand out clearly against the iron rich host rock. Despite the small size, the specimen shows numerous clearly visible crystal faces and the compact habit typical for Coulsonite. Under magnification the surface appears especially vivid and detailed.

Geology & origin

Dublabera in India is known for vanadium rich ore deposits containing various rare oxide minerals. Coulsonite is a rare iron vanadium oxide belonging to the spinel group and forms under specific conditions in vanadium bearing deposits. The mineral usually occurs as small metallic crystals or granular aggregates. Well documented specimens from India are appreciated among collectors of rare oxide minerals.
