Cotunnite crystals from Pacha Limani, Laurion, Greece – miniature specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen shows Cottunite crystals from Pacha Limani, Laurion, Greece. The piece features a dark finely structured matrix with lighter partly translucent crystal aggregates in cavities, creating a strong visual contrast.

The Cottunite crystals are present and show a compact partly prismatic habit. They are embedded in small cavities of the matrix and display a slightly vitreous to greasy luster. The crystals are not fully free standing but can be clearly identified as individual crystal areas.

Geology & Origin

Cottunite is a rare lead chloride mineral that typically forms in the oxidation zone of lead deposits. It develops under specific conditions, often in dry and saline environments, and can crystallize in cavities or on matrix surfaces.

The Laurion area in Greece is one of the most important classic localities for a wide variety of rare secondary lead and copper minerals. The deposits around Pacha Limani are especially known for their mineralogical diversity.
