This 100 g lot consists of numerous small natural Corundum pieces with Sapphire portions in predominantly blue-gray to steel-blue tones together with yellowish, beige to orange-brown matrix and weathered areas. Several pieces still show clearly angular to partly crystalline shapes, while others are more compact and irregular. Color distribution varies from piece to piece, ranging from darker blue areas to paler and partly translucent sections. The combination of Corundum, Sapphire and natural matrix gives the material a varied rough appearance. The picture shows a sample.

Geology & Origin

Sapphire is the colored variety of the mineral Corundum and consists chemically of aluminum oxide. Blue coloration is typically caused by small amounts of iron and titanium, while yellowish tones may be associated with iron within the crystal structure. Corundum forms mainly under aluminum-rich and silica-poor geological conditions, for example in metamorphic rocks as well as certain igneous and pegmatitic environments. Madagascar is one of the important source regions for Corundum and Sapphire and hosts numerous deposits with differently colored material. The small rough pieces offered here show the typical natural combination of blue Corundum areas, matrix remnants and weathered zones.
