Conichalcite and Malachite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia – micromount as unique piece

This micromount shows Conichalcite and Malachite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia. Bright green crystal areas stand out clearly against the light to yellowish green matrix. Conichalcite forms fine crystalline, vivid yellow green coatings and small aggregates with clearly visible crystal structure. In cavities and on fracture surfaces, intensely emerald green Malachite crystals occur, forming compact and partly velvety looking zones. The crystals are distinctly developed and together create a vivid color contrast between yellow green and deep green.

Geology & Origin

Conichalcite is a basic copper arsenate that forms secondarily in the oxidation zone of copper and arsenic bearing deposits. Malachite is a basic copper carbonate and one of the most common secondary minerals in copper deposits. The Tsumeb Mine is world famous for its exceptional diversity of copper and arsenate minerals formed through complex weathering and redistribution processes. The paragenesis shown here reflects typical formation conditions within the oxidized zones of this unique polymetallic deposit.
