Cobaltomenite xls on Krutaite from Mina El Dragón, Potosi, Bolivia – micromount as unique piece

This micromount specimen with Cobaltomenite crystals on Krutaite from the Mina El Dragón, Potosí, Bolivia, shows a mineral association that is very typical for this locality. On a dark grey to metallic-looking Krutaite matrix, small but distinct Cobaltomenite crystals occur as greenish to bluish shimmering aggregates.

The Cobaltomenite crystals are small yet clearly visible and stand out well against the dark matrix. They appear mainly as fine crystalline coatings and localized aggregates. Individual crystal forms can be observed under magnification, with the crystalline nature being clearly evident. The combination of metallic Krutaite and colorful secondary minerals gives this specimen a distinctive aesthetic and mineralogical appeal.

Geology & Origin

The Mina El Dragón in Potosí is world-renowned for its exceptionally diverse mineralization, including numerous rare selenides and secondary minerals. Krutaite is a copper selenide forming the primary matrix, while Cobaltomenite is a secondary cobalt selenite mineral formed through oxidation processes. These rare mineral associations are characteristic of the oxidized zones of the deposit and make the locality highly significant for specialized collectors.
