Willemite and Dolomite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia – miniature specimen as unique piece

This miniature specimen shows Willemite and Dolomite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia. Numerous rounded Willemite crystals in warm brownish red tones occur on a light carbonate matrix. The crystals are clearly developed and form compact, slightly raised aggregates with lively surface texture. Dolomite appears in light, finely crystalline areas between and around the Willemite crystals, creating a harmonious color contrast. The combination of both minerals gives the specimen a balanced and richly detailed appearance with well visible crystal development.

Geology & Origin

The Tsumeb Mine in Namibia is one of the world’s most important localities for an exceptional variety of primary and secondary ore minerals. Willemite is a zinc silicate that commonly formed in the oxidation zone of this complex polymetallic deposit. Dolomite is a widespread calcium magnesium carbonate occurring there both as a vein mineral and as part of the surrounding carbonate host rocks. The paragenesis shown here reflects the complex formation processes within the unique Tsumeb deposit.
