This position comprises 100 g of schorl (black tourmaline) in the form of crystal fragments from Tanzania. The material shows the typical prismatic crystal shapes of schorl in deep black to dark grey tones with matte to slightly lustrous surfaces. The pieces occur as broken crystal segments, with the characteristic longitudinal striations of tourmaline clearly visible. The material is well suited as reference and collection material as well as for the systematic study of the tourmaline group. Size, shape, and crystal development vary from piece to piece, giving the position a natural mineralogical diversity.

Geology & Origin

Schorl is the iron-rich variety of the tourmaline group and forms mainly in granitic pegmatites as well as in metamorphic rocks. The Tanzanian occurrences are known for strongly colored, massive to crystalline schorl that often displays well-defined prismatic forms. The crystals form under complex geochemical conditions in which boron-rich solutions play a key role. Tanzania is regarded as an important source of tourmalines of various varieties and has supplied mineralogically interesting material to collectors for many years.
