Cacoxenite xls; Rotläufchen Mine; Waldgirmes, Germany; Gerd Tremmel collection; Scab; unique piece
Cacoxenite crystals from the Rotläufchen Mine, Waldgirmes, Germany, Gerd Tremmel collection – small cabinet specimen as unique piece
This small cabinet specimen shows Cacoxenite crystals from the Rotläufchen Mine, Waldgirmes, Germany, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. On the brown to reddish distinctly layered matrix, bright yellow Cacoxenite crystals occur in radiating, fibrous habit. The crystals run through the rock in veins and nests, forming intensely colored silky areas that contrast strongly with the darker host rock. The crystals are clearly developed and give the specimen a characteristic, lively structure with striking color contrast.
Geology & Origin
Cacoxenite is a hydrated iron aluminum phosphate that forms secondarily in the oxidation zone of phosphate rich deposits. At the Rotläufchen Mine it typically occurs in association with other iron phosphates within weathered ore veins. It forms through the alteration of primary phosphate bearing minerals under oxidizing conditions. The Waldgirmes locality is considered one of the classic German occurrences for phosphate minerals and is well documented mineralogically.
