Bystromite and Ordenezite from Aqua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico– small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features Bystromite and Ordóñezite from Agua Prieta in Sonora, Mexico. The surface displays a vivid combination of colors: green, whitish, and yellow-golden patches form thin coatings and fine-grained aggregates across the light brown matrix. This distribution of typical borate and arsenate phases creates a lively, mosaic-like appearance. Under magnification, the specimen shows the fine, matte to subtly sparkling texture characteristic of the microcrystalline habits of Bystromite and Ordóñezite.

Geology & Origin

Agua Prieta in Sonora is one of Mexico’s classic localities for rare borates and arsenates that form within complex oxidation zones of polymetallic ore bodies. Bystromite develops through reactions between boron-rich fluids and magnesium-bearing host rocks, whereas Ordóñezite forms as an arsenate phase within the same geochemical environment. The association of both minerals is typical for this locality and gives specimens like this their distinctive coloration and fine-grained texture.
