Britholite-(Ce) from Vevja, Langesundfjord, Norway– micromount as unique piece

This micromount specimen shows a compact black mass of Britholite-(Ce) on a light matrix. No crystals are developed; instead, the mineral forms an irregularly textured, matte surface with slightly lustrous areas. The dark coloration contrasts nicely with the pale nepheline syenite matrix, making this a typical example of the species from this classic Norwegian locality.

Geology & Origin

Britholite-(Ce) is a rare silicate containing rare earth elements that forms in alkaline pegmatites and syenites. The Langesundfjord area, including Vevja, is well known for its abundance of such rocks rich in rare elements. Britholite-(Ce) commonly occurs there as compact aggregates associated with Aegirine, Eudialyte, and Astrophyllite. This paragenesis is characteristic of late-stage magmatic processes that produced many of Norway’s rare-earth-bearing minerals.
