Brandtite crystals from Harstigen, Sweden – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This rare small cabinet specimen originates from the classic manganese deposit of Harstigen in Sweden and displays Brandtite on a dark iron and manganese rich matrix. The specimen shows light gray to whitish mineralized areas that contrast strongly with the brown host rock. Individual crystals are only partly recognizable on this specimen; Brandtite occurs mainly as fine-grained to compact aggregates. The rarity of the mineral and the historic importance of the locality make this piece an attractive addition to collections focused on Scandinavian and rare manganese minerals.

Geology & Origin

Brandtite is a calcium manganese arsenate and belongs to a group of rare minerals that form in manganese-rich deposits. Harstigen in Värmland is one of Sweden's most important classic localities for rare manganese minerals and has produced numerous scientifically significant mineral species. Complex alteration processes affecting manganese-rich ores led to the formation of an exceptional mineral assemblage in which Brandtite occurs together with other rare arsenates and silicates. Due to its rarity, material from Harstigen is highly valued in specialized mineral collections.
