Boussingaultite crystals and Cronstedtite from Gernrode, Harz, Germany – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen shows Boussingaultite crystals together with Cronstedtite from Gernrode, Harz, Germany. The piece is characterized by a fine grained to crusty surface with light, partly whitish to slightly pink areas contrasting with the darker matrix.

The Boussingaultite crystals form fine granular to slightly crystalline coatings, while the Cronstedtite appears more massive to finely aggregated. Well developed individual crystals are not visible, but the crystalline nature is evident through the texture and subtle luster.

Geology & Origin

Boussingaultite is a rare hydrated ammonium iron sulfate that typically forms in the oxidation zone of sulfide rich deposits. Cronstedtite is an iron rich phyllosilicate of the serpentine group and usually forms under hydrothermal conditions or through alteration of iron bearing minerals.

The Harz region, especially around Gernrode, is well known for its diverse mineral occurrences and historic mining activity, which has produced a wide variety of rare mineral formations.
