This miniature specimen displays embedded Blixite crystals in dark manganese rich matrix from the classic Langban locality in Sweden. The fine grained to compact structure shows a metallic to slightly silky luster and features the characteristic complex mineral intergrowths typical of Langban material. This historic specimen originates from one of the world's most important deposits for rare manganese minerals.
Geology & Origin
Langban in Sweden is one of the most famous mineral localities in the world and is especially renowned for its extraordinary diversity of rare manganese minerals. Blixite is a rare manganese iron antimony oxide that has only been identified at very few localities worldwide. The deposit formed through metamorphic alteration of manganese rich sediments and produced an exceptional number of scientifically important mineral species. Many rare minerals from Langban are today regarded as classic collector specimens from historic European localities.
