Blatterite crystals from Nordgruvan, Nordmark, Sweden – micromount as unique piece

This micromount specimen features Blatterite crystals from Nordgruvan near Nordmark, Sweden. The rare crystals are positioned on a dark metallic matrix and form fine highly reflective crystal aggregates with silvery gray to steel colored luster. Under magnification the tiny crystal faces become especially visible, giving the specimen a vivid and complex structure. Despite its small size, the specimen shows a remarkably rich crystal coverage and comes from a classic Scandinavian locality known for rare manganese and iron minerals.

Geology & origin

Nordmark in the Swedish province of Värmland is one of the best known historic ore districts in Scandinavia. The deposits are especially famous for their diversity of rare iron, manganese, and arsenic minerals. Blatterite is an extremely rare mineral formed in complex metamorphically altered ore deposits. Typical are its dark metallic crystal aggregates, which usually occur only in small pockets. Specimens from Nordgruvan are highly appreciated by specialized collectors of Scandinavian minerals.
