Betafite crystals from Betafo, Madagascar – micromount as unique piece
Rare Betafite crystals are present on this micromount specimen as well-defined cubic crystals with a characteristic brownish to yellowish weathered surface. Despite natural alteration, the crystal forms remain clearly recognizable and give the specimen significant scientific and collector value. Due to the rarity of the mineral, Betafite is highly sought after by specialized micromount collectors.
Geology & Origin
Betafite is a rare uranium titanium oxide belonging to the pyrochlore group and typically occurs in pegmatitic or metasomatically altered rocks. The Betafo region of Madagascar is renowned for numerous rare mineral species and has produced many scientifically important discoveries. The crystals shown here represent a characteristic example of this unusual mineral.
