Bastnäsite-(Ce) crystal and Allanite-(Y) crystals from Trimouns, Ariège, France– miniature specimen as unique piece

This miniature specimen features a well-formed, honey-brown Bastnäsite-(Ce) crystal resting on a white, finely crystalline matrix. Embedded dark brown to black Allanite-(Y) crystals accompany it, recognizable by their elongated, prismatic habit. The combination of a sharply defined Bastnäsite-(Ce) crystal with the embedded Allanite-(Y) makes this piece particularly attractive and characteristic of the renowned Trimouns locality.

Geology & Origin

The Trimouns talc deposit in the French Pyrenees is globally known for its remarkable diversity of rare-earth minerals. Bastnäsite-(Ce) and Allanite-(Y) form in hydrothermally altered pegmatites and carbonate rocks where rare-earth elements become concentrated through metasomatic processes. These geochemically complex conditions allow for the formation of sharp Bastnäsite-(Ce) crystals alongside the typical embedded Allanite-(Y) aggregates.
