Barytocalcite, partly UV-active, from Långban, Sweden– small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features Barytocalcite from Långban in Sweden, one of the world’s most renowned localities for complex and unusual mineral assemblages. The piece consists of a grey-white to light matrix with fine-grained, tightly intergrown mineral zones. The specimen shows the typical massive form of Barytocalcite with a subtly sparkling, matte surface. Part of the material fluoresces under UV light, which supports identification and makes this specimen especially appealing for collectors of fluorescent minerals.

Geology & Origin

The Långban deposit in Värmland Province is considered one of the most mineralogically diverse localities worldwide. Its complex, manganese-rich skarns and metamorphically overprinted ore bodies have produced more than 270 mineral species, including many type-locality minerals. Barytocalcite forms there through reactions between barium-rich fluids and carbonate rocks under high-temperature contact-metamorphic conditions. This specimen displays the typical massive habit of Barytocalcite from Långban and shows the characteristic fine, sparkling texture known from the site.
