Barium-Pharmakosiderite crystals from Kamariza, Laurion, Greece– small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen features Barium-Pharmacosiderite crystals from Kamariza in the Laurion district of Greece. The surface is coated with an intense reddish-brown to ochre crust, showing fine-grained, matte shimmering areas typical of this barium-rich variety. The coloration ranges from dark reddish brown to lighter yellow-brown tones, giving the specimen its distinctive appearance. The crystals occur in dense aggregates, producing the characteristic slightly porous structure associated with the classic Laurion paragenesis.

Geology & Origin

The Laurion region in Greece is one of the most historically significant mining districts of the ancient world and is well known for its exceptional diversity of secondary minerals formed in the oxidation zones of silver-lead veins. Barium-Pharmacosiderite develops through reactions between arsenate-bearing solutions and barium-containing minerals under oxidizing conditions. The Kamariza area continues to yield characteristic specimens of this rare mineral species, notable for their warm brown hues and densely intergrown micro-aggregates.
