Barahonaite - (Fe) crystals from Mazarrón, Spain – rare iron arsenate from the Reconquistada Mine

Barahonaite-(Fe) is an extremely rare iron arsenate of the tyrolite group. This specimen was collected in 1998 from the Reconquistada Mine near Pastrana in the historic Mazarrón district, Murcia region, Spain. It shows bluish-green coatings on oxidized matrix, typical of secondary arsenates in this classic mining area.

The mineral occurs as massive to fine-grained aggregates without visible crystal forms, but with a characteristic coloration. Barahonaite-(Fe) is significantly rarer than its copper analogue Barahonaite-(Cu) and has been confirmed from only a handful of localities worldwide. A valuable reference piece for systematic micromount collections.

Geology & Origin

The Reconquistada Mine is part of the Mazarrón ore district in southeastern Spain, known for its wide range of secondary copper and arsenic minerals. In strongly oxidized zones of former pyrite and copper deposits, rare alteration minerals such as Barahonaite-(Fe) can form under semi-arid weathering conditions.
