Argyrodite crystals on Pyrargyrite from Colquechaca, Bolivia – micromount as unique piece
This micromount specimen features Argyrodite crystals on Pyrargyrite from Colquechaca, Bolivia. The piece shows dark gray to black metallic Argyrodite crystals sitting compactly on the matrix, accompanied by scattered shiny areas. The Argyrodite crystals are partly massive and partly weakly developed, while Pyrargyrite is recognizable by its characteristic dark tone with a subtle reddish sheen. The combination of these rare silver minerals gives the specimen a distinctive aesthetic and mineralogical significance, further enhanced by the original old Freiberg label.
Geology & origin
The deposits of Colquechaca are among the classic silver ore occurrences of Bolivia and are known for their complex hydrothermal vein systems. Argyrodite and Pyrargyrite form in silver rich solutions under varying temperature and pressure conditions, producing a wide range of sulfosalts that often occur together. These parageneses are particularly rich in rare mineral species and are of great interest to collectors.
