This miniature specimen displays Argutite in compact habit on contrasting matrix from the Rimbatz Mine in the French Pyrenees. The metallic lustrous to bronze colored areas appear strong and distinctive against the lighter host rock. The specimen features a natural richly textured surface with a typical oxidized patina and originates from a rare European locality of this unusual mineral.
Geology & Origin
Argutite is a rare germanium oxide mineral known from only a few localities worldwide. The Rimbatz Mine near Argut Dessus in Haute Garonne is considered one of the classic European occurrences of this rare species. Formation took place in hydrothermally influenced ore zones containing germanium rich mineral phases. Because of the rarity of the mineral and the limited availability of specimens, pieces from this locality are especially valued by collectors of rare minerals.
